Palm Beach Pictures received further development funding from Screen Australia for its feature Butterfly Sting. This unusual thriller is being penned by Kris Wlyd (Creator/Writer East West 101, Dangerous Remedy) and produced by David Elfick. The project also has UK based script editor and thriller expert, Angeli McFarlane, on board. Angeli is currently head of development at Altered Image Films and a UK industry consultant.
Butterfly Sting centres on Lisa, an emotionally fragile entomologist, who draws upon her own scientific work with insects to effect revenge when the murderer of her only sister goes unpunished by the state. It is a contemporary thriller set in the steamy tropics of South East Asia.
Clare Sawyer has recently joined Palm Beach Pictures to develop children's projects for the company. Recently she curated the Flicker Up competition program of students shorts for the Flickerfest International Film Festival, in addition to her Youth programming for Cockatoo Island, Dungog and Dubbo Film Festivals in 2012. Prior to this Clare was the General Manager and Producer of the Inside Film Awards from 2007-2010.
Her next step is attending the Berlin Film Festival in February, where she has a placement to assist with the competition program of the Generation 14 + Section. On her return she will visit Singapore producing partner, Mind Champs Media, to work on prospective projects in the region, including a film festival program.
Palm Beach Pictures and Mind Champs Media, Singapore have joined forces to develop a new Children's television series based on Brian Caswell's A Cage of Butterflies. Dangerously Smart is being written by Australian writer Jonathan Empson with a view to producing a 8 X half hour series in Singapore with an international cast. The series will be produced by David Elfick and David Chiem.
Dangerously Smart is based on A Cage of Butterflies, a young adult novel by Brian Caswell, which was first published in 1992 and reprinted 12 times over the next 12 years. This popular book is a classic tale of a group of young teens outsmarting a powerful antagonist with little outside or adult help – a theme shared by countless classic children’s books from The Famous Five and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe through to Harry Potter and Tomorrow, When the War Began to more recent works such as Gone by Michael Grant.
